Milwaukee - Wisconsin, which is a US state that is widely known for its cheese production, has found an ingenious way to de-ice many of the state's major roadways by using cheese brine.

State officials have recently begun looking into other de-icing alternatives as a way to lessen the state's dependance on traditional salt. The Huffington Post states that using cheese brine is often more cost-effective than using salt. Jeffrey A. Tews, who works as a fleet operations manager for the public works department, recently told the New York Times: “You want to use provolone or mozzarella. Those have the best salt content. You have to do practically nothing to it." Geek.com reports that another key benefit of using cheese brine over traditional salt is the fact that it doesn't bounce when hitting roadways and isn't as likely to be swept away onto the sides of roads or into ditches. According to ENN, Wisconsin produces more cheese than any other US state. In 2012, the state produced roughly 2.7 billion pounds of cheese.
