Under rules of Obamacare, the FDA will require vending machines to display calorie counts on items sold. A number of people who own vending machine companies and a number of consumers criticized the new rules in online interviews.

According to foodbeast.com, the FDA believes the new rules will better inform consumers to make healthier choices. Almost five million machines across the United States will be required to have new caloric information. The estimated cost to vending machine companies across the company has been listed at $25.8 million at first and $24 million annually after the initial costs. Reportedly officials believe the savings in health care costs would be just as great as the cost to the food industry, but only if a number of obese adults eat 100 fewer calories per week. The USA Today reported those in the vending machine industry are not happy with the new rules. They believe the costs to comply are high, and they will not recover the money they will have to spend. They also believe consumers will reap few benefits from the new rules. "It is outrageous for us to have to do this on all our equipment," Carol Brennan, who owner of Brennan Food Vending Services, commented on the new rules. She also said she believes consumers will benefit little from the rules. "How many people have not read a label on a candy bar?" she asked. "If you're concerned about it, you've already read it for years." Consumers were reported as also criticizing the new regulations. "People have their reasons they eat well or eat poorly," Kim Gould, 58, of Seattle was reported as saying in Yahoo News. He said he does not read food labels, so the new rules will not make a difference to him. He said he only buys from the machines when he has no other option anyway. "How do we know people who are buying candy in the vending machines aren't eating healthy 99 percent of the time?" he asked.
