New York - A long-lost instrumental by the sminal New York band Talking Heads, from a pre-'77' CBGB gig, has emerged and is available on YouTube.

The website Talking Heads.net has been passed on a live recording of a musical number by the band Talking Heads. The number has been made available on YouTube. The track is an instrumental, sans David Byrne's distinctive vocals. The instrumental was performed a few months prior to Talking Heads releasing their debut album "77". The song was played at the legendary (and now closed) New York club CBGB. It seems that the music was rarely played by the band and never laid down as a studio recording. The music appears to be called "Theme", as the start of the YouTube recording suggests. In the beginning, David Byrne introduces the song. "No title?" a fan asks, and he responds, "We call it 'Theme,' but then we just keep it to ourselves." Talking Heads were an 'art-rock' band who put out a string of innovative and challenging albums between 1977 and 1988. To select one song which typifies Talking Heads is difficult. Perhaps 'Once in a Lifetime', where Byrne takes on the persona of a manic preacher, or the post-apocalyptic 'Road to Nowhere'. Post-Heads, David Byrne went onto pursue a successful solo career. Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz continued with their Tom Tom Club project and Jerry Harrison became a music producer. The five-minute song opens with ominous guitar and soon spreads out, finding a sun-dappled beachy groove before culminating in a noisy finish. Here is the 'lost' track:
