A 75-year-old man from France, after surviving a week with an artificial heart, chatted with family and fed himself. The man was the first in the world to be fitted with an artificial heart.

"He is awake, feeding himself and talking with his family. We are thinking of getting him up on his feet soon, probably as early as this weekend," Professor Daniel Duveau, was reported by ABC as saying. The professor saw the patient on Thursday and made his comments to French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche (JDD). Heart-assistance devices have been used for decades temporarily for patients who were awaing transplant. The device used this time, a bioprosthetic product made by French biomedical company Carmat, is different. It has been made to replace a human heart over the long-term. It mimics nature by using sensor and biological materials. Because some patients cannot get a heart transplant, the device was made to extend the life of patients suffering from terminal heart failure. Such patients may not get a heart transplant because of their advanced age or the fact there have not been enough donors. Although the artificial heart has been tested on animals, it has never been used in a human being. It can beat for five years. Top News Today showed a picture of the device. "We are delighted with this first implant, although it is premature to draw conclusions given that a single implant has been performed and that we are in the early post-operative phase,” the chief executive of Carmat, commented, as reported by the Telegraph.
