Pittsburgh - The Pitt Panthers led by the impressive scoring of Brianna Kiesel downed their cross-town rival the Duquesne Dukes Sunday night 67-57, at the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh.

The Dukes had an early lead with six unanswered points until a layup by Cora McManus put the Panthers on the board with a little over four minutes into the game. The Dukes kept their lead most of the first half until a layup by Kiesel put the Panthers ahead 17-16. The Dukes were not able to regain the lead. Both teams had a less than impressive offense, with the Panthers making only 37 percent of their field goals, and 22 percent of their 3-pointers. The Dukes were only able to net 30 percent of their field goals and 19 percent of their 3-pointers. A total of only 46 points were scored the first half, with Pitt up 26-20. Before the start of the game, Kiesel, a junior point guard from Utica, New York, was honored with a basketball and flowers for being the 18th player in program history to score 1,000 points. In the first half, Kiesel scored 16 or 61 percent of the Panther’s 26 points. She scored a total 27 points during the game, outscoring every other player by at least 11 points. Leading the Dukes in scoring was sophomore point guard April Robinson with 16 points and Wumi Agunbiade was a close second with 14. Duquesne’s head coach Dan Burt said, “I’m extremely disappointed in our effort. We were tentative, we were slow to the ball, we didn’t have great effort toward the ball, and we were out-played.” “I am very proud of our team and the effort they made,” said Pitt’s head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio who left the Dukes in March to coach Pitt. “Honestly they wouldn't even look at me pregame,” said McConnell-Serio referring to the Dukes. “I said all along this game was about preparing our team, and the focus was us getting ready for this game,” added McConnell-Serio. Under McConnnell-Serio’s leadership the Dukes beat the Panthers the last two years. The Dukes (9-5) in a nationally televised game will host St. Bonaventure on New Years, while Pitt hosts Florida State also on New Years. This will be the first Atlantic 10 Conference game for the Dukes.
