Israel's state archives has published a 50-year-old letter from the Mossad spy agency claiming it trained Nelson Mandela in hand-to-hand combat, weaponry and sabotage.

Yahoo News claims that the Haaretz newspaper first reported the story and reported "Ethiopians" was code for Israeli Mossad agents working in Ethiopia. These "Ethiopians" worked to make Mandela a Zionist. Mail & Guardian reports that the letter from a Mossad official to the foreign ministry is dated October 11, 1962, and titled "THE BLACK PIMPERNEL". Now released to the public, it recalls a conversation in which "we discussed a trainee in Ethiopia named David Mobasari, from Rhodesia". Both "The Black Pimpernel" and "David Mobasari" were pseudo names for Nelson Mandela. The letter reveals that Mandela took an interest in the methods of the Hagana and Jewish militias that existed before Israel's creation in 1948. Iol.co.za reports that the October 11, 1962 memo, labelled “Top Secret,” suggests the Israeli trainers thought the man they later discovered was Mandela, was from Rhodesia - now Zimbabwe - where African nationalists at the time were struggling against colonial rule. Only after Mandela was arrested and his picture published did the Israelis determine his true identity. Yaacov Lozowick, Israel's state archivist, said there was no political agenda behind the publication of the documents now. Lozowick said the archives often publicize documents that may be “interesting” in connection to current events, such as Mandela's death earlier in December 2013. Israeli relations with the current South African government remain cool. The South African government is a fervent supporter of the Palestinian cause. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not attend Mandela's funeral. In a decision that was widely criticised, the globe-trotting Netanyahu cited the high cost of chartering a plane and bringing a large security detail.
