Riyadh - Saudi Arabian religious police have warned citizens not to celebrate New Year's while in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates that city will attempt to set a Guiness world record for a fireworks display.

In Saudi Arabia the Commission of the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice known as mutawa, issued its warning based on a religious edict from a committee of Saudi clerics that bans such celebrations. Saudi Arabia follows the Muslim lunar calendar rather than the Gregorian calendar followed by all the other Gulf states. The Commission also issued a warning that gift shops should not sell merchandise associated with the celebration including flowers and dolls. Some Saudis accuse the religious police of abusing their powers. The most recent chief Abdulatif al-Sheikh has done away with the use of unmarked cars that allowed the police to catch unsuspecting Saudis committing acts of vice. The Saudis are also opposed to Cupid and Valentine's Day on which the sale of red roses and other Valentine gifts are banned. In the neighbouring United Arab Emirates city state of Dubai, New Years celebrations will be spectacular as they intend to feature more than 400,000 fireworks . The emirate has vowed to "break the Guinness World Record for the ‘Largest Firework Display’," a government statement said. In case you happen to be in Dubai or nearby this site tell you where are the best viewing sites for the display. One suggested location is Burj Khalifa the world's tallest building. You can also just stay home and watch it all on your TV. The show will take place over two man-made islands, The Palm Jumeriah and The World. It is set to a specially choreographed musical soundtrack and scenes designed exclusively for the event. More than 200 pyrotechnicians are overseeing the display which will be launched from 400 locations. Each year Dubai has staged spectacular celebrations at New Years. I have appended a video of the 2013 New Year celebration in Dubai.
