Grenoble - According to doctors in the Grenoble hospital where Michael Schumacher is being treated, the seven-times world Formula One champion is "fighting for his life" and slipping into a coma.

Michael Schumacher was seriously injured when he fell over while skiing off-piste in the French Alpine resort of Meribel and hit his head on a rock. The 44-year old racing legend was wearing a helmet at the time and doctors admitted that without the protective helmet "he would not be here with us now." Currently the medical team treating him at the University Hospital in Grenoble have said they are treating him "hour by hour." Schumacher has undergone emergency surgery during Sunday night to relieve some pressure in his head. But doctors have reported that there were lesions within the brain. He is being kept in an artificial coma to control the body temperature and help with his potential recovery. The medical team at Grenoble said it was concentrating on supplying oxygen to his brain and keeping the body at the desired temperature of around 35c (95F), as reported in the Guardian. The F1 legend had been skiing with his son Mick when the tragic accident happened, and he is now keeping a bedside vigil along with Michael's wife Corrinna and younger daughter Gina Maria. Live updates on Michael's condition can be found here.
