In Chile a variety of conjures and superstitions are supposed to increase the prospects of having a successful New Year. Some folks in the city of Talca spend the night and have dinner with their deceased relatives at the local cemetery.

Not only a good dinner, champagne, fireworks, a hug and a kiss as part of New Year celebrations for people around the world. In addition to a wide range of New Year resolutions, many traditions aim at promoting romantic success, financial gains, and aspects related to quality of life. The following are some of the major traditions that many Chileans carry out on New Year's Eve looking for favourable prospects in the New Year. 1. Eating grapes promotes abundance. Grapes are synonymous with well-being and a good life. Thus, eating twelve grapes will bring health and happiness during the twelve months of next year. Eating 13 grapes will not only bring health, but also fortune. 2. Going for a walk with a suitcase. One of the most common beliefs is to take a walk around the block on New Year’s Eve carrying a suitcase. This ensures that in the next year there will be many opportunities to travel the world. 3. Eating lentils will make you rich. Eating a serving of lentils with New Year’s dinner will bring you much wealth. The tradition indicates that consuming at least a teaspoon of lentils facilitates achieving prosperity and economic comfort. 4. Clean arms eliminates negative charges. To start the year off on a positive track, before midnight one must wash both arms with cool water from the elbows to the fingertips. This eliminates negative emotions and promotes well-being over the next year. 5. Wearing yellow underwear. Both men and women should wear yellow underclothing (panties and briefs) during the New Year's Eve. It promotes success in love and relationships. 6. Exchange a garment with your partner. This conjure serves to strengthen romantic relationships. The couple should swap a piece of their wardrobe. Wearing each other garment will renew and strengthen their commitment during the following year. 7. Bay leaves will bring you money. A bowl of water with a pinch of salt and several bay leaves should be placed on the New Year Eve’s dinner table. After midnight each guest should take a leaf and keep it in its wallet. A wallet containing a laurel leaf will never be short of money. 8. Sugar, cinnamon and a candle will bring you love. People who feel lonely and want to find love during 2014 should put on the dinner table a bowl with sugar, cinnamon and a pink candle in the middle. Light the candle precisely at midnight.
