A new study shows that Panax ginseng has anti-fatigue effects on patients who have chronic fatigue. After four weeks of using ginseng, patients felt significantly less fatigued and had better mood and cognitive performance.
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a complex disease marked by extreme, chronic fatigue that significantly interferes with daily activities, and isn’t due to exertion. It doesn’t go away with rest and must be of recent onset. According to the CDC, a patient must also be diagnosed with four of the following symptoms to be diagnosed with CFS: “post-exertion malaise lasting more than 24 hours, unrefreshing sleep, significant impairment of short-term memory or concentration, muscle pain, pain in the joints without swelling or redness, headaches of a new type, pattern, or severity, tender lymph nodes in the neck or armpit, a sore throat that is frequent or recurring.” If someone with chronic fatigue for six months or more doesn’t have at least four of the above symptoms, then the patient is diagnosed as having idiopathic chronic fatigue (ICF), which is fatigue having no known cause. ICF is about 10 times more prevalent than CFS. A new study by Hyeong-Geug Kim, Chang-Gue Son, and colleagues from Daejeon University, in Daejeon, South Korea examined the use of one or two grams of Panax ginseng per day in patients with ICF, and compared the results to a placebo. After four weeks, those who used two grams of ginseng per day felt significantly less fatigued than those on placebo. Mental fatigue symptoms were significantly improved by both one and two grams of ginseng, compared with the placebo. Improvements in fatigue severity were likely due to antioxidant effects of Panax ginseng, because serum oxidative stressors were significantly reduced by those who used the herb. This study was published in the journal PLoS One. Recent research also shows that Panax ginseng improves physical capacity. Patients who use blood thinners should avoid ginseng. Researchers conclude that:
“Panax. ginseng can be used to combat chronic fatigue and that the mechanism underlying this effect may be related to its antioxidant properties.”
