Ibi - Fierce fighting broke out in Ibi, Spain on Saturday, but it was all for fun. As part of the "Els Enfarinats" festival, residents pelted each other with flour bombs and eggs. Fireworks lit the scene too.
The Els Enfarinats festival dates back 200 years and coincides with yet another festivity, "El Día de los Inocentes", (Innocents' Day) which is Spain's version of April Fool’s. As you can imagine, loads of fun is to be had. A group of married men, known as the "Enfarinats" (or "Flour Police"), take siege of Ibi, a town in the Valencian Community, and under the slogan "New Justice", they proceed to impose a series of ridiculous laws on residents. Anyone who doesn't obey the new laws is then given unofficial fines. Anyone who doesn't pay the fine is then sent to "jail." This follows with a fierce battle of flour, eggs and firecrackers between the "Enfarinats" and their opposition, "La Oposició," who try to restore order in the town. More photos of the event can be viewed on The Local. This all happens in the Plaça de l'Església (Church Square) of the town. All's well that ends well, as any money collected as "fines" is then donated to charitable causes in the town. Possibly some of the money raised could be given to the poor street cleaners who have to clean up after the event:
Maybe this festival could be combined with that other great food fight, "La Tomatina", which happens in August in Buñol, also in the Valencian Community. Flour, eggs and tomato would make a great pizza!
