Capcom executives seem to have forgotten the rule of thumb regarding to never disrespect or insult its core fan-base (don't bite the hand that feeds you).
In a special investment report that was published online, Capcom attributed the backlash of the new direction of the Resident Evil-series to the core fan base having become "too old". The report also warned that the traditional fans may lose interest in video games as the years go by. It should be noted that according to the Entertainment Software Association, the average age of a gamer is 30 years old and they have been playing for about 13 years. Too no surprise; many Resident Evil fans are outraged that they are being blamed for Capcom's failuer. Looking back; 2012 was not a good year for the series as Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City and Resident Evil 6 were critically mixed while gamers were frustrated with the games creative direction. Video game journalists were among the first to voice their outrage in articles with less then subtle headlines. Owen Good, writer for Kotaku (the video game branch of Gawker Media), ridiculed the report while Zachary Freeman, writer for Mod Vive, described the report as further proof that Capcom is out of touch with its fan base. Message boards and news aggregator sites have been flooded with fans expressing their outrage. Even younger fans (between the ages of 18 -23) have voiced their disappointment in Capcom report along with their out of touch outlook with the franchise. Many fans blame the failure of Resident Evil 6 on Capcom attempt to develop an action orientated game that would also appeal to casual gamers. A common critic has been the series has abandoned its core elements just to become more like Call of Duty. Almost all voice have pointed to flaws in Capcom strategy that have caused this friction while being out of touch with the fan base. Gamers have also expressed their desire for the series to return to its horror survival roots, similar to Resident Evil: Revelations. This is not the first time Capcom has blamed fans for a games failure, in 2011 a Tweet suggested that Mega Man Legends 3 was cancelled because of the fans. Then in 2013; the controversy regarding DMC: Devil May Cry caused Capcom to drop its sales expectations from 2 million to 1.5 million units.
