Former NBA star Dennis Rodman goes ballistic when he appeared on Chris Cuomo's "News Day" program on CNN prior to Rodman's selected ex-NBA stars team playing with the North Korean basketball team in Pyongyang on Wednesday.
Rodman, who is on his fourth visit to North Korea reacted angrily to Cuomo's line of questioning during the interview which was witnessed by members of his team who are mostly ex-NBA stars. At one point during the interview, fellow NBA player Charles D. Smith tried to pacify Rodman, who was visibly angered by Cuomo's line of questioning. Smith later said that apparently the message they are trying to convey is not being properly carried out. "What we are doing is positive, but it is getting dwarfed by the other circumstances around it," Smith told The Associated Press. "Apparently our message is not being conveyed properly due to the circumstances that are much bigger than us, and I think that has to do with politics and government." Rodman was apparently irked when Cuomo asked about American prisoner in North Korea, Kenneth Bae, who has spent over a year in captivity for alleged spying and illegal acts against the state. Rodman thought the Korean-American prisoner had done something wrong. "Do you understand what he did in this country?" Rodman asked Cuomo. "No, no, no, you tell me, you tell me. Why is he held captive here in this country, why? ... I would love to speak on this," he said. "You know, you've got 10 guys here, 10 guys here, that have left their families, they've left their damn families, to help this country in a sports venture. That's 10 guys, all these guys here, do anyone understand that?" "We do," responded Cuomo. "And we appreciate that and we wish them well with cultural exchange." Cuomo added. "No, no, no, no," Rodman continued. "I don't give a rat's ass what the hell you think. I'm saying to you, look at these guys here, look at them ... they dared to do one thing, they came here." Rodman has been insisting that his travel to North Korea is all about basketball and nothing about US diplomacy. Early this year, Rodman traveled to North Korea with members of Harlem Globetrotters, who played an exhibition game with North Korea's basketball team. Rodman was seen together with Kim watching the basketball game. "I'm just trying to go over there to meet my friend Kim, the Marshal," Rodman said. "Try to start a basketball league over there, something like that." Rodman and Kim have developed a what seems to be a close friendship as a result of his last three visits to the communist country. Rodman has called Kim a "very good guy" despite the country's poor human rights record. Rodman has made it clear that he is not doing or engaging in diplomacy between the US and North Korea.
