There seems to be a growing desire among Americans to secede and form new states and countries. Is this merely talk or is it the beginning of something huge?
Lawmakers and voters could soon have to make a decision regarding the proposed 51st state, Jefferson. Several counties in the California/Oregon border region have expressed interest in seceding from their respective states and forming a new one, which they claim will be based on limited government, free markets, and constitutional principles. This, however, is not the first time that the topic of secession has been brought up in recent years. Quite the stir was caused back in November of 2012 when citizens in all fifty states started petitions to secede from the union. Louisiana and Texas were the first two states to file petitions on the White House.gov's official "We The People" website and were subsequently the first to reach the threshold of signatures that warrants a response from the White House. The White House did eventually respond to the petitions in general by noting their interest in preserving the union. The White House.gov petitions certainly got people talking but didn't really do much else. Last summer, however, something really interesting happened. Several counties in Colorado who were angered by some legislative decisions threatened to secede from the state and form "North Colorado." Last summer was also when activist Adam Kokesh called for a "second American Revolution," suggesting that the United States federal government should be abolished by either peaceful means or force if necessary. So it has certainly been an interesting couple of years with regards to the growing disillusionment with government and political affairs. Will this lead to some sort of uprising; a revolution or rebellion if you will? Will new states be formed? Will a civil war occur? It's hard to tell at this point but one thing is for sure; the people are becoming more and more interesting in real, radical change.
