Norwegian sheep farmers are concerned about a brutal new practice, after a farmer found several sheep with lures attached to their wool. It is thought that the sheep are captured and stolen for slaughtering.
In a practice that has been dubbed "sheep fishing", it is believed that sheep thieves are using fishing hooks to capture the sheep in the Skånevikfjord area (between Stavanger and Bergen), which are then taken away and slaughtered. According to VG Nett (Norwegian), several sheep were found with the fishing hooks lodged in their fleece, along with a dead lamb which was missing it's thighs. NRK (in Norwegian) reported that a farmer, Olaf Sævareid, says it is unknown how many sheep he has lost from his flock of several hundred, but he did say that his neighbor was missing seven or eight ewes. Another farmer is missing at least 13 sheep. The farmer said that he noticed the same thing last year when sheep disappeared without a trace. Sævareid is planning on setting up game cameras to monitor his sheep in the future. Police are asking the public for help in the matter. Sheriff Ingvar Gjerde has asked local residents to be observant of unfamiliar cars driving around the district.
