Gay singer-songwriter Boy George has taken to Twitter to express his annoyance at former boxing world champion Evander Holyfield’s remarks about sexual orientation.

Holyfield – currently appearing in Celebrity Big Brother on the UK’s Channel 5 – was warned about his remarks by Big Brother producers after he suggested that homosexuality wasn’t normal behaviour. According to Digital Spy, Holyfield described homosexuality as a “choice” and compared it to a disability, “appearing to say that it was something that could be ‘fixed’. After learning of the remarks, Boy George took to Twitter to admit that he had been a fan of Holyfield before.” Boy George (52) tweeted: “Shame, I had such admiration for Mr Evander Holyfield, he seemed dignified and I was sure he was a cool, smart, giant!” Digital Spy quotes Boy George as saying: “At customs there should be a huge sign! Welcome to Britain, racism, sexism, homophobia and bad hair are not tolerated!”

Holyfield’s remarks came in a conversation with retail entrepreneur Luisa Zissman. He’s quoted as saying: “If you were born and your leg was turned this way – what would you do? You go to the doctor and get it fixed back, right?” “All I’m trying to tell you, you know how handicap people are born […] You can’t say because they are born that way you can’t move that.” Later, the former fighter added: “It is a choice […] Come on, how can you not say you ain’t gay unless you’re sleeping with the opposite sex?” Celebrity Big Brother continues tonight at nine o’clock UK time on Channel 5.
