Denver - More than 100 people lined up in the snow outside Cannabis 3D Center to buy legal marijuana Wednesday. They lined up outside because there were dozens of journalists, reporters and TV crews inside.
Colorado became the first state to sell legal marijuana. In South America, the nation of Uruguay legalized weed earlier this month. As with abortion and homosexual rights the trend is in one direction. Toni Fox, owner of what had been a medical marijuana dispensary on Denver’s north side, said only small amounts of weed would be sold on this first day to make sure supplies didn’t run out. Sales were likely to range from about $50 to $100, and each sale would face a combined state tax of 25 percent. Fox expects to be a millionaire before the year is out. Other ganjapreneurs were expected to join her in Colorado’s green rush, akin to the software industry’s creation of instant millionaires though the number will be smaller. On the south side of town, the Clinic Colorado’s parking lot was full. Mason Tvert, who had led the campaign to legalize pot, said it was wrong to call what Colorado is doing an experiment. “Prohibition was an experiment,” he told reporters. Lawyer Brian Vincente, who has worked with pro-marijuana Sensible Colorado since 2005, said he didn’t believe medical marijuana users needed cards anymore. But that would depend on where they were and what the dispensary wanted. Although Fox’s dispensary was stocked with medicinal marijuana she said she was moving entirely to recreational marijuana. Roughly 30 outlets were open Wednesday, with half of them in the Mile High City area. No police were in visible sight outside the stores in Denver. Washington state also has legalized marijuana but its outlets were not expected to open until late spring. Although it has been reported that banks were refusing be involved in weed transactions, some dispensaries have been taking credit or debit cards for years. Denver has more marijuana dispensaries than Starbucks and McDonalds combined. Marijuana.com voted CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta its man of the year for destroying lies about marijuana. Gupta also revealed to an ill-informed nation that there are two main ingredients in marijuana, and one of them, CBD, does not get users high. THC is the more commonly known grass, and is used to get stoned.
