Berlin - German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been injured in a skiing accident during a holiday in Switzerland. She has apparently suffered a hairline fracture to her pelvis during cross country skiing.
Merkel was on holiday in Engadin, in the canton of Graubünden, over the Christmas holidays. According to a government spokesman, Steffen Seiberg, Merkel has suffered "serious bruising in connection with a partial fracture on her left posterior pelvic ring," adding that “We believe she was going at a low speed.” Apparently initially Merkel thought she had merely suffered a bruise, as she could walk unaided, and only visited a doctor on her return to Berlin. Merkel cannot currently travel by plane and will have to lie down as much as she can over the next three weeks, according to Seiberg. When walking around, she will need to use a walking ring. Merkel was due to visit Poland and also had a meeting planned with the Luxembourg Prime Minister at home in Berlin. However, she will have to cancel the Poland trip and according to Seiberg will be able to work from home. She will, however, be able to attend the German cabinet meeting on Wednesday, but will have to skip the annual World Economic Forum meeting in the Graubünden resort town of Davos later in January. However, according to Seiberg, Merkel had made the decision not to attend the January 22nd-25th meeting prior to her skiing accident. According to DW, there is no report as to exactly where the accident happened or the circumstances surrounding it. However, there is apparently some question as to the age of the skis being used by Merkel at the time. The skis are reportedly Germina Alpha CS, made in Germany between 1992 and 1995. According to the company's website, on a previous occasion when Merkel had been seen skiing in the Swiss resort of St Moritz on the same Germina skis, it was noted that "While the skis are no longer the newest, they are German skis!" One of the managers of the company did mention to the Bild newspaper that possibly Merkel should plan on buying a new pair of skis. He said that after 10 years with regular use, skis tend to lose some of their effectiveness.
