Former world boxing champion Evander Holyfield has been defended by his son after he made controversial remarks about sexual orientation on a the UK reality TV show.

Holyfield Snr is a contestant in Celebrity Big Brother, but was reprimanded by producers after he said homosexuality was a “choice” and he compared it to a disability, seeming to say it was something that could be “fixed”. Now, son Ewin Holyfield has come to his father’s defence, saying the fighter doesn’t dislike gay people and doesn’t judge others by their sexuality. As Digital Journal reported yesterday, singer-songwriter Boy George (52) criticised Holyfield Snr by tweeting: “Shame, I had such admiration for Mr Evander Holyfield, he seemed dignified and I was sure he was a cool, smart, giant!” Digital Spy quotes Boy George as saying: “At customs there should be a huge sign! Welcome to Britain, racism, sexism, homophobia and bad hair are not tolerated!” Ewin Holyfield told TMZ: “My dad is the most loving and caring person you will ever meet. He treats everyone like a human being […] even if they are homosexual. “My dad feels that being gay is a choice […] and naturally that’s how things work. You cannot procreate and make a baby with two women, or two men. But at the same time, my dad is not going to judge someone for their sexual orientation.” Holyfield Jnr added that his father’s former brother-in-law is gay and that his father has always treated him like a brother. Digital Spy tells how Holyfield “was called to the Diary Room” in the Channel 5 show “shortly after the conversation in which he made the remarks and was given a warning by Big Brother to make no further potentially ‘offensive’ comments. “Evander responded by saying that he understood that his remarks could be viewed as offensive, but stressed that he never intended to offend or influence the others with his religious beliefs.”
