At a Saturday rally in Utah organized by a conservative law enforcement group, opponents of marriage equality called for a police-backed "uprising" to "take back freedom" by barring LGBT Americans from marrying.
Raw Story reports the Highland rally was sponsored by the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association (CSPOA), which according to its website exists "to equip sheriffs, peace officers and public officials with the necessary information and public support to carry out their duties in accordance with their oaths of office." Former Graham County, Arizona sheriff Richard Mack accused gays of forcing their "agenda" on the rest of America. "The people of Utah have rights too, not just the homosexuals," asserted Mack. "The homosexuals are shoving their agenda down our throats." Until late last month, LGBT Utahans did not have the same rights as heterosexuals, namely, the right to legally marry. That changed when US District Judge Robert J. Shelby ruled that the staunchly conservative state's ban on same-sex marriage was an unconstitutional violation of gay couples' rights to due process and equal protection, opening the door for around 900 couples to marry. But on Monday, the United States Supreme Court issued a temporary stay of Shelby's ruling, halting same-sex marriages in Utah. Event organizer Cherilyn Eager spoke about the need for (heterosexual) Utahans to fight for their rights. "We need people to stand up and speak out," Eager said. "We need to get noisy. We need some outrage. It is about the sheriffs now coming out to protect the people," presumably from gays and their insidious agenda. "We have a right to raise our kids without homosexuals being part of the Boy Scouts," Mack railed. "Don't shove your agenda down my kid's throat. We have a right to raise our kids how we want." Mack said that it would be necessary to "take back freedom in America... one county at a time." "The sheriffs need to defend the county clerks in saying, 'No, we're not going to issue marriage licenses to homosexuals,'" he said.
