Colorado City - A small airplane crashed on Sunday killing the co-pilot and injuring two other people who were on board as it tried to land at the Aspen Airport in Colorado.
Alex Burchetta, who works with Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, said investigations are underway to determine the possible cause of the crash. He added: “Right now, we have no indication that there was anything wrong prior to landing.” Witnesses termed the incident as “scary” while describing how the jet overturned and became consumed by flames. According to recording done by the air traffic control radio transmission, the pilot of the ill-fated jet had earlier reported high winds as he attempted to land, “Missed approach, N115WF. 33 knots of tail wind,” the pilot is heard saying a few minutes before the crash. Dr. J. Steven Ayers, Pitkin County Coroner recorded the primary cause of death as blunt force trauma. As a result of the impact from the crash, the pilot and the co-pilot, who was identified as Sergio Carranza Brabata 54 year old Mexican, were rushed to a local hospital having suffered “moderate to severe injuries.” NTSB spokesman Peter Knudson said that the National Transportation Safety Board sent a team of detectives to look into the cause of the crash. Aspen Airport is recognized as a challenge for landing due to the mountains surrounding the runway. The runway is frequently filled with private jets owned by the rich and famous in Colorado. The jet had originated from Toluca, Mexico, some fourty miles west of Mexico City.
