Sidney Crosby made the team, as did Drew Doughty, Roberto Luongo and Jonathan Toews, all players you knew would make it. In a country ripe with hockey players the picking could not have been easy but the results, announced today, look...golden?

The announcement in Toronto started with a disjointed and overlong talk from Marcel Aubut, president of the Canadian Olympics Committee, including an awkward attempt to get the crowd there to cheer 'Go, Canada, Go, and words from other dignitaries, in both languages. Finally, some 20 minutes after it all started Steve Yzerman was on the podium and the announcements themselves of the 25 players finally got underway. Team Canada 25 man roster The goalies were the first named and there were no surprises: Roberto Luongo, Carey Price and Mike Smith. They were announced alphabetically and that works out to the way they are likely viewed: the incumbent Luongo with the first shot, the newcomer Price ready to step in, and Smith there in case of injury. Corey Crawford was likely the closest to getting in, in place of Smith, and given his Stanley Cup last season and his record, and Smith's slightly off-season, there was an argument Crawford should be the number 3. It is on defence that the big surprises came, notably no Dan Boyle and no Brent Seabrook. Instead, and this is a bit of a surprise, the Vancouver Canucks Dan Hamhuis. PK Subban of the Montreal Canadiens is there, he was the subject of much speculation, and so is the San Jose Sharks' Marc-Edouard Vlasic. Joining Hamhuis, Subban and Vlasic are those you had to expect: Jay Bouwmeester, Drew Doughty, Duncan Keith, Alex Pietrangelo and Shea Weber. Up front there is no James Neal, no Logan Couture, no Claude Giroux, no Milan Lucic and no Martin St. Louis. Those who made it that were on the bubble, prognosticators would tell you, were Jamie Benn of the Dallas Stars and Patrick Marleau of the Sharks. You also get Patrice Bergeron, Jeff Carter, Sidney Crosby, Matt Duchene, Ryan Getzlaf, Chris Kunitz, Rick Nash, Corey Perry, Patrick Sharp, Steven Stamkos, John Tavares and Jonathan Toews. Yzerman: Calls Tampa forward Martin St. Louis Yzerman, who is the GM of the Tampa Bay Lightning where St. Louis plays, spoke to media later and said it was a tough choice to leave his player, St. Louis, off; St. Louis was also left off the 2010 team that won gold in Vancouver. Yzerman said he himself made the call to St. Louis to tell him he did not make the team but declined to reveal details of that call. There will be time to replace any injured players so there's still a chance for any of those who didn't make it. Steven Stamkos is recovering from a broken leg and is one name that comes up when talk of possibly needing a replacement comes. One of the country's best players, his recovery is reported to be going well.
