Cairo - At a news conference earlier last week, an Egyptian Army doctor confidently announced that the country's military had developed a cure for the virus that causes AIDS. This has been met with disbelief throughout the scientific community.
According to the New York Times, The doctor, Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Abdul Atti has said that he and his scientists have developed cures for HIV and hepatitis C. Major General Atti said that the Egyptian military had been funding the research for several years. General Abdul Atti said, according to subtitled video of the announcement "You will never find another patient suffering from the Hepatitis C virus after today, God willing." The video is shown below: The only evidence offered was a video made by the Army, which showed patients were hooked up to boxlike machines and patients being monitored by doctors, where the doctors were seen holding a hand exerciser attached to an antenna that swiveled. According to the National Post, using a World Health Organization report, an estimated 20 percent of Egyptian blood donors test positive for hepatitis C. The country’s H.I.V. infection rate is less than 1 percent, according to the Joint United Nations Program on H.I.V. and AIDS. Independent experts have, so far, been highly skeptical about the inventions and treatments, the L.A. Times reports. No evidence has yet been published and no independent peer review has been undertaken. Emma Thomson, a specialist in infectious diseases at the University of Glasgow, is quoted by Arabian Business as saying "I can find no evidence to support the claims that this device detects hepatitis C or any other viruses as mentioned in the patent, nor any clear theoretical rationale for how it would work."
