In southeastern Turkey today a soldier in the Turkish Army was killed by an explosive. His death constitutes the first death of a Turkish military personnel since the ceasefire between the Turkish state and Kurdish militants.
Cihan reports that the soldier in question died in the Turkish province of Şırnak near the Iraqi border after stepping on a land mine which had likely been placed there by PKK militants. His name was Musa Sumay, he was 28-years-old and had had a baby a month ago. Reuters reminds us in its report that the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) had spearheaded a ceasefire back in March 2013 in order to help push forth peace talks between Ankara and the jailed leader of the PKK, Abdullah Ocalan. The PKK had engaged the Turkish state for over 20 years when they began an armed campaign against it beginning in 1984. The jailed leader of the PKK began negotiating an end to the conflict in late 2012. The three-decade long campaign has left at least 40,000 dead in its wake.
