If you haven't heard of Ladar Levison, he is the man who ran the e-mail service used by Edward Snowden. That service has now been shut down.

Ladar Levison founded his ISP Lavabit nearly ten years ago. On August 8 last year, he shut it down rather than hand over its encryption keys to the US Government. This is the notice that currently appears on the site's homepage. Last week, Levison spoke to the BBC about the state of play and what he thinks will happen. He is currently engaged in protracted litigation that may go all the way to the Supreme Court - with the concomitant expense.

That is the bad news; the good news is that he has now teamed up with the legendary Phil Zimmerman, and they are working on a new project called Darkmail. It is possible the American Government may succeed in criminalising Levison, but with the Zeitgeist having now turned firmly against this type of global intrusive surveillance, by the time they succeed, they may have to throw ten or twenty million other people in gaol with him. If you think this sort of thing does not affect you, think again, especially if you have ever clicked the LIKE button on YouTube or Facebook.
