Oslo - PayPal co-founder and US tech billionaire Elon Musk visited Norway on Friday to thank the 2,100 Norwegians who bought his Tesla S electric sports cars. Norway is the second biggest market for the vehicles after the US.
Musk hosted a dinner event at the luxury Oslo hotel, the unusually named "The Thief." Among his upmarket guests were local dignitaries including Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit, along with the manager of Norway's oil fund, Yngve Slyngstad and property millionaire Christian Ringnes. Saturday saw a meeting at the Folketeateret in central Oslo, where he answered questions from Norway's Tesla owners. Speaking of some problems that Tesla owners have experienced as a result of the cold in Norway, he said, "There have been some small problems here, but mostly it's been good." The problem was in connection with charging the car in the winter cold and has been given a high priority by Tesla. At first it was thought to be a problem with the cable, but it has since been found that the tension in the Norwegian electricity grid varies more than expected, Musk explained during the meeting in Oslo on Saturday. This problem will be resolved by the company as soon as possible. In both September and December of 2013, the Tesla Model S was the top-selling new vehicle in Norway, with 2,100 sold in total to date. In the US, more than 20,000 of the cars have been sold. Norway is offering generous government incentives to drivers, making ownership of an electric car very attractive and so far, Tesla has taken 25 percent of the market in that country.
