The amount of people migrating into the UK against the levels of those emigrating out of the country, or net migration, has risen to 212,000. These figures are for the year to September 2013.
The official figures from the Office for National Statistics mean the net flow rose from 154,000 in the previous year. These figures are well above the 100,000 and below that prime minister David Cameron has targeted to reach by 2015. The increase has been driven mainly by an influx of migrants from EU countries and there were also big increases from citizens of Poland, Spain, Italy and Portugal into the UK. Citizens from Romania and Bulgaria increased three-fold from the previous year up to 24,000. There are no figures for the amount of Romanian and Bulgarian migrants since January 1, when restrictions were lifted. It now seems very unlikely that Home Secretary Theresa May, and David Cameron will reach anywhere near the target figures it set. Nigel Farage, the UK Independence party (Ukip) leader said the the latest figures showed "just how out of control" the government is on immigration; and as far as the election pledge to cut migration levels, Farage said it was "game over."
