Kabul - The Taliban have produced dozens of “proof of life” videos featuring combatants they have taken hostage. The latest release is a first in the war. The Afghans are providing evidence of still holding a dog captured in December of last year.

The dog, a Belgian Malinois, has been confirmed by U.S. media as a working dog attached to the British military. The Ministry of Defense will not confirm the nationality of the prisoner, following its longstanding policy of refusing to comment on Special Forces activities. Unofficial British sources are suggesting the canine belonged to either the elite Special Air Service or their naval counterparts the Special Boat Service. A Taliban spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, said that the dog was of great importance and that it carried special electronic equipment. He also said the dog had attained the rank of Colonel. Military dogs are traditionally assigned ranks higher than their handlers to encourage the handler to treat the dog with respect. Many handlers state that it is to note that the dog is the one really in charge. The dog appears to be in good health and wags his tail at several points in the video. The canine soldier is still wearing its body armor. The video also shows captured M4 rifles with suppressors and scopes typical of special operations units. This is the first known case of dog being treated as a Prisoner of War. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have expressed outrage over the use of dogs in war. The British military has used dogs since World War I, and the United States armed forces used dogs as early as the Revolutionary War.
