Cairo - The Egyptian Interior ministry has warned users of social media, such as Facebook and Twitter could be arrested if they incite violence through their postings.

Egyptian authorities claim that they are using modern technology to track those whose posts incite violence against the police or civilians. Already ten members of the Muslim Brotherhood, recently declared a terrorist organization, have already been arrested on the basis of their posts. Egypt is cracking down hard on any who criticize the military-backed government even to the point of arresting and holding for some time five Al Jazeera journalists. Al Jazeera has defended the journalists against charges that they had tried to falsify video footage to support the aims of a terrorist group and distort the image of Egypt abroad. Any material that appears to defend the Muslim Brotherhood can be interpreted as providing aid to terrorism. A statement by 46 international editors and journalists who cover Egypt said that the three English channel detainees are all well respected and that upholding the rights of journalists and a free press were in Egypt's best interests. Egypt is ranked 158th out of 179 countries for press freedom by Reporters Without Borders. While the use of social media was an important factor in the spread of the Arab Spring protests, repressive regimes are now using the same social media to keep track of activists and even arrest them. The process has been going on for some time with bloggers being arrested in countries such as Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Egypt is rushing to train more and more security and intelligence officers in the new technology and techniques. Jerry Lucas president of TeleStrategies Inc. the company which runs the ISS World trade show that educates officers on surveillance technology said that Egypt is boosting its training like crazy although he would not give specific numbers but said: "Egypt is very concerned about with monitoring social networks ". However he added: " Every Middle Eastern country is sending more people to ISS World." At this ISS site a map showing six different conferences in different parts of the world including the USA in Washington. You still have time to register for an upcoming ISS training session in Washington D.C. on April 9 and 10. Registration is only $795 each person for the two day session. The link to registration and the agenda can be found here. A useful general description of new developments is also provided. You will learn about new modes of gathering intelligence such as Open Source Intelligence (OSINT): Open source intelligence (OSINT) is a form of intelligence collection that involves finding, selecting, and acquiring information from publicly available sources and then analyzing it to produce actionable intelligence. Now that the Internet is dominated by Online Social Media, OSINT is a critical component of both criminal and national security investigations. Too often, investigators and analysts overlook or underutilize this valuable resource.
