Ypsilanti - The Michigan woman was arraigned earlier this month on several charges including super drunk driving and resisting arrest by biting a police officer on the arm.
The alleged incident took place in September but an arrest warrant was not issued until December when authorities received the results of blood tests. On Sept. 7 last year, at around 10 p.m., police were called to a Ypsilanti intersection where a vehicle had crashed. Det. Sgt. Thomas Eberts said, "It was obvious she was pretty intoxicated at the time." Eberts also said the woman resisted arrest when she bit an officer on the arm. The officer did not require medical treatment. On Jan. 7, Catherine Demery was arraigned on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated (second offence), operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .17 or over, minor operating a vehicle with any amount of alcohol, minor in possession of alcohol, possession of marijuana, driving with a suspended licence, malicious destruction of property and two counts of resisting arrest. Demery had taken her boyfriend's car without his permission and also faces a charge of unlawful use of a motor vehicle. In addition to the offence of operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OUI), Michigan has an offence of super drunk driving. A person is guilty of super drunk driving if they have had no OUI convictions within the past seven years but have a BAC of .17 or more. Maximum jail terms increase from 93 days in jail for a OUI to 180 days. Fines and terms of imposed driving restrictions are also increased for super drunk driving. A person convicted of super drunk driving must have an ignition interlock device installed in their vehicle when they are subject to driving restrictions. Anyone charged with super drunk driving is required to undergo alcohol treatment for at least one year. Demery is not shy about using social media to tell the world how much she enjoys drinking. On her Twitter account, aptly named @crazii_cathii, she wrote "There's a full half gal of captain morgans somewhere in my house." In another entry, she wrote, "THE TETHER COMES OFF TODAY...#LETSGETWASTED." At her arraignment, Demery was released on a $5,000 bond and is due to appear back in court later this month.
