For the second time in less than a month, a Petaluma, California company has issued a recall of beef products processed by the company because diseased animals were processed without benefit of a full federal inspection.
On Saturday, a whole years worth of processed meat was recalled by a Northern California company, Rancho Feeding Corporation, because the meat came from diseased and unhealthy animals without the benefit of a complete federal inspection, according to officials. Over 8.7 million pounds of beef products, a mix of beef carcasses and parts such as heads, cheeks, lips, livers, feet and tongues, packed in boxes of 20 pounds or larger, as well as 40-pound boxes of veal bones and 60-pound boxes of veal trim was recalled by the California company. The company was already under scrutiny by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) because of a previous recall of beef products on January 8 of this year. At that time, 40,000 pounds of beef were recalled because a complete inspection wasn't done. The federal agency said that without a full inspection, the products are unfit for human consumption. All the products involved in the recall were processed and shipped between January 1, 2013 and January 7, 2014. The products were shipped to distribution centers and retail establishments in California, Florida, Illinois and Texas. All the boxes have "EST. 527" in the USDA inspection mark, and a case code number ending in 3 or 4. The agency pointed out there were no illnesses reported in association with the recall, and it was not immediately known if any of the beef products were sold in any form in restaurants or grocery stores. It was also unclear which companies the products were initially shipped to. A spokesman with the USDA's Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) said some of the products could still be frozen and in storage. It was for this reason that a Class I recall was issued, because "the product could cause serious, adverse health consequences."
