New Zealand ripped the top off the Indian batting to take a firm grip on the first Test Friday after setting an imposing first innings 503 on the back of a Brendon McCullum double century.
At tea on the second day India were 45-3 with key runmakers Cheteshwar Pujara and Rohit Kohli already dismissed.
Pujara, who averages 66.25, and Shikhar Dhawan were both removed in a dramatic first over when they edged good-length swinging deliveries from Trent Boult.
Tim Southee followed with the dismissal of Kohli when he produced a sharply rising bouncer that nicked the batsman's glove, and inside six overs India were 10 for three.
Murali Vijay was not out 22 with Rohit Sharma on 16 as they led the fight to revive India's innings.
New Zealand had also lost early wickets on the first day when they were sent into bat and were 30-3 when McCullum joined Kane Williamson in the middle to mount a rescue mission.

Williamson went on to score 113 after a 221-stand for the fourth wicket and Corey Anderson posted 77 in adding 133 for the fifth wicket.
McCullum continued to plunder the bowling until being the last wicket to fall for 224, one run short of his career best 225, also set against India at Hyderabad in 2010.
He became only the fourth New Zealander to score more than one double century, behind Glenn Turner, Stephen Fleming and Mathew Sinclair, and set the highest score by a New Zealander and fourth best overall at Eden Park.
In his marathon stand lasting just under eight hours, McCullum faced 307 deliveries and belted 29 fours and five sixes.
New Zealand resumed the second day on 329 for four with McCullum and Anderson in a belligerent mood.
They put on 55 in under 10 overs before Anderson was removed after being hit high on the pads by Ishant Sharma, the most effective of the Indian bowlers.
Sharma also claimed BJ Watling (one), Ish Sodhi (23) and McCullum to return figures of six for 134.
The McCullum wicket to end the innings was the result of a fine athletic performance by Ravindra Jadeja.
He leapt high to take the ball just inside the boundary then flicked it infield as momentum took him over the rope, returning to the field of play in time to complete the catch.
