Toronto - Now in its 10th season, the New Creations Festival has become a hallmark of TSO programming. It has welcomed artists from across Canada and the world, and premiered the works of emerging and renowned contemporary composers.

In honour of the 10th anniversary of New Creations Festival, the 2014 Festival features a roster of artists who have been a part of this festival in the past, including: the Canadian premiere of internationally-in-demand composer, Finnish Magnus Lindberg’s Piano Concerto No. 2 performed by pianist Yefim Bronfman; a TSO commission and world premiere from Canadian composer Brian Current; Canadian composer Vincent Ho’s City Suite: Concerto for Amplified Cello and Orchestra, featuring Canadian cellist Shauna Rolston; and the St. Lawrence String Quartet, who performed in the first New Creations Festival, returns in 2014 to perform the Canadian première of John Adams’ Absolute Jest. After his TSO debut in the 2011 New Creations Festival, American composer John Adams returns with his music as a focus in the 2014 Festival. TSO Music Director Peter Oundjian leads Adams’s Doctor Atomic Symphony and the composer conducts the Canadian premières of his Slonimsky’s Earbox and Absolute Jest, as well as the Canadian première of a new work by Canadian composer Zosha Di Castri. Other highlights of the Festival include superstar violinist Leila Josefowicz who will première a concerto written for her by Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Kevin Lau who will unveil his second orchestral work as the TSO's RBC Affiliate Composer, Down the Rivers of the Windfall Light. The pre-concert performances, intermission chats, and post-concert parties are another hallmark of the New Creations Festival. Programming includes pre-concert performances by the Glenn Gould School New Music Ensemble conducted by Brian Current; the Gryphon Trio performing new works from the Soundstreams Emerging Composers Workshop; and the St. Lawrence String Quartet. Post-concert parties get jazzy with the Hugh Marsh Trio with Rich Brown and Barry Romberg; Jazz pianist Steve Koven with the Steve Koven Trio; and the Hot Jazz String Quartet, led by violinist Drew Jurecka and guitarist Jesse Barksdale, evoking Django Reinhart, Stephane Grappelli, and 1920s Paris. And on Tuesday, March 4th, from 12 noon to 1pm, John Adams Hallelujah Junction for two pianos will be performed in a free lunchtime concert in the Canadian Opera Company’s Richard Bradshaw Atrium.
