Today's Daily Mail has an impassioned plea for the British government to cut foreign aid and spend monies on victims of the current flooding. With yesterday's radio bulletins stating floods in Somerset are at biblical proportions it seems the end is nigh!
The front page of the English edition of the Daily Mail newspaper has a plea for the UK government to cut foreign aid and use this capital to "rescue" stricken home or landowners devastated by the current high tides, storms and floods. While radio bulletins, allegedly originating from senior people within government or establishment yesterday compared some flooded land in the Somerset area to biblical tales, relative to Noah's Ark it could be assumed?
Floods and tidal surges are nothing new for the UK, in August 1952 the Lynton and Lynmouth area in North Devon was devastated by flood waters from the "trickling and friendly" rivers Lyn, which morphed to torrential terror following strong rainfall over Exmoor. A credible witness from the 1950s (my mom!) advised that flood waters around the Southend on Sea area reached ceiling height during the 1950s, too, so it does seem the Government spokesperson that announced more than one million homes In Britain had been safeguarded by coastal defence protections now in place may have been referring to this Thames outlet and the barrier put in place. Coastal erosion has been an issue in the UK for many years now. Certainly for "not in my backyard" (NIMBY) newspapers such as the Daily Mail to call for cuts to foreign aid to deal with UK storms and sea damage is negating some of the very real charitable exercises conducted by this current British government and it is hope right minded MPs and strategic thinkers will ignore such short termism and initiate moves to very real coastal defences that may serve to protect the UK mainland for future generations.
The images here were taken in Southend on Sea just after New Year 2014 and indicative of types of tidal surge experienced in this area when the Thames Barrier is operational. It may be unlikely the tides will affect this neighborhood as badly as other areas of southern and western England, though as can be seen, where the coastal wall has been breached in the surrounding area, it's possible some newbuild homes in the vicinity will be flooded at later dates.
