A medication designed to treat acute, symptomatic hypoglycemia has been recalled from the market due to microbial contamination.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), calcium gluconate 10% injections made by Rx Formulations, Mesa, Arizona, U.S., have been voluntarily recalled from the market by the manufacturer. Calcium gluconate 10% injections are used to treat hypoglycemia (a medical emergency that involves an abnormally diminished content of glucose in the blood, or 'low blood sugar'). FDA testing confirmed the presence of microbial contamination in lot #778961 of Rx Formulations’ calcium gluconate injection product. The testing identified bacteria in the product. A contaminated injectable drug can put patients at risk of adverse health consequences and possibly a serious infection. This finding led Rx Formulations to recall the products marketed as sterile. FDA has advised health care providers and hospital staff should immediately check their medical supplies, and quarantine the affected products. Patients who were administered any drug marketed as sterile produced by Rx Formulations between November 7 and December11, 2013, and who have concerns, are advised to contact their health care provider.
