Crans - Three pensioners from the French Riviera decided to stay at a luxury ski chalet in the Swiss Alps for a couple of months. They then skipped the scene, without paying the bill of approximately 170,000 euros, or around $232,000.
Just imagine these three elderly people, living the life of luxury with massages, health and spa treatments, silk sheets and the best champagne. For two months they lived the life of a rich celebrity in a 5-star 12,000 euro (around $16,000) a week chalet in the mountain resort of Crans-Montana in the Swiss Alps. Then the three pensioners from the Côte d’Azur did a skip and left behind their rather hefty bill of 170,000 euros ($232,000). It definitely sounds like a great script for a movie. Apparently what they did was to sign an “acknowledgement of debt" to the owner and then just left the premises. Apparently this is nothing new, but it is a record amount involved. The director of Crans-Montana explained that criminals of this kind often go to a lot of trouble to present a false image in order to get in to the luxury property. “They arrive in helicopters they haven’t paid for elsewhere, or in swanky cars – Rolls-Royces or Ferraris with a hired chauffeur at the wheel,” he explained. Apparently these three retired crooks didn't exactly hold back either, and enjoyed everything on offer, “It was things like confectionery with vintage champagne, health treatments, massages, silk sheets and the limousine service,” according to Christine Schmitz, a representative from the local tourist office. Reportedly the trio have been sentenced by a Swiss court for their crime, but are still on the run. Apparently Swiss police are considering asking French police to assist in tracking them down.
