The Northern lights were seen over many parts of the UK on Thursday night, and some as far south as Essex, Norfolk and Gloucestershire were able to witness the spectacle.

AuroraWatch UK, a group run by enthusiasts and physicists at Lancaster University, has been posting updates on Twitter when the Northern Lights are visible, and where in the UK. Naturally many of the sightings were best seen in Scotland, but around 9 p.m. on Thursday night, the colourful sight began to spread south to northern England, Cumbria and Northumberland. The light display is caused by electrically charged particles from the sun coming into contact with earth's atmosphere. Usually, the ethereal display is only witness around the polar regions . In the southern polar region, the light display is known as aurora australis, and few outside Antarctica get to witness the display at all. When one sees the Northern Lights, it will generally appear as a streak of colourful light dancing and weaving spectacularly across an entire sky vista. The colours often change between reds, pinks, pale green and violet. A number of magical images of Thursday night's Northern light show in the UK can be seen here. The electrically charged particles take about three days to reach earth and when they do they cause the gas atoms in the sky to become illuminated.
