The battle between gun rights advocates and gun control advocates continues to rage on with new petitions now emerging to counter a petition that asks Facebook to ban gun related content from their website.
Digital Journal reported yesterday that Facebook is now considering banning all gun-themed pages from their social media websites in an attempt to please groups like "Mayors Against Illegal Guns" and "Moms Demand Action." The two anti-gun groups recently started a petition on Change.org encouraging Facebook to stop allowing gun sales and trades on the Facebook and Instagram websites. Gun rights supporters were understandably angry when it was announced that Facebook was considering a ban on all gun-themed pages as a response to the anti-gun advocacy groups' petition. The pro-gunners are now trying to counter the groups with a series of petitions of their own. One new petition on Change.org calls for Facebook to continue their "current rules on pages allowed on Facebook. Especially those that are centered around firearm enthusiasts." Another petition, this one on ipetitions.com, goes even further, saying that signers will stop using the popular social media website and cost them "millions in advertising revenue." This petition reads as follows:
We, the undersigned, would like to inform Mark Zuckerburg, as well as the investors, advertisers and related companies of Facebook, that we will reduce or cease using Facebook, and any associated product, should you choose to ban firearms, or any other legal item, from your site. We will direct our social networking elsewhere, costing you millions in advertising revenue, and costing your advertisers sales.As of this morning, one of the pro-gun petitions has 3,260 signatures and the other has almost 1,700. The anti-gun petition has almost 100,000 signatures but it has been active for much longer than the other two.
